Most vehicles have a fuel drain tube. After fuel pump supplies fuel to engine and injector, the remaining fuel is sent back to the fuel tank through the tube. The surplus gasoline vapor collected by the carbon canister also returns to the tank through it, which can relieve the pressure of fuel and reduce its consumption.
The fuel supply system of diesel engines is generally equipped with three fuel drain tubes, while some only have two without the tube from fuel filter to the tank.
Return tube on fuel filter: When the fuel pressure provided by fuel transfer pump exceeds 100-150 kPa, the overflow valve in the tube on fuel filter opens, allowing excess fuel to flow back to the tank through it.
Return tube on fuel injection pump: Due to the fact that the fuel delivery capacity of transfer pump is 2-3 times the maximum delivery capacity of fuel injection pump under the calibration operating conditions, excess fuel flows back to the tank through the tube.
Return tube on fuel injector: When fuel injector is working, a very small amount of fuel will leak from the mating surface between needle valve and its body, which can provide lubrication so as not to accumulate too much fuel causing the needle valve to malfunction because of high back pressure. This portion of fuel is introduced into fuel filter or tank through hollow bolts and return tubes.
The function of fuel supply tube is to transport the fuel from the tank to fuel injector, which then injects the fuel into cylinder and combines it with the air inside to form combustible mixture, thereby ensuring the normal operation of engine.
