Flywheel is a disc-shaped part with large moment of inertia, which acts as an energy memory. For a four-stroke engine, work is done once by every four piston strokes, and it’s consumed by three strokes: exhaust, intake, and compression. Therefore, the torque output from crankshaft varies periodically, and crankshaft speed is also unstable. To improve this situation, a flywheel is installed at the rear end of crankshaft.
The main function of flywheel is to store energy and inertia outside the work stroke of engine. A four stroke engine has only one work stroke, and the energy for intake, exhaust and compression comes from that stored in flywheel. Due to discontinuous work of each cylinder in the engine, the engine speed also varies. When the speed increases, the kinetic energy of flywheel increases, it stores energy. When the speed decreases, the kinetic energy of it also decreases, energy is released. It can be used to reduce speed fluctuations during engine operation.
