The crankshaft position sensor is usually installed at the front end of crankshaft (at the pulley), or the rear end of crankshaft near the large flywheel or in the middle. It's one of the most important sensors in the control system.
Its function is to detect the engine speed, hence it's also known as a speed sensor, and detecting the top dead center position of the piston, so it's also called the top dead center sensor, including detecting the top dead center signals of each cylinder used to control ignition and the first cylinder used to control the injection sequence. The most significant function of the crankshaft position sensor is to determine the position of crankshaft, that is, the crankshaft angle and engine speed. It usually works together with camshaft position sensor to determine the basic ignition time.
