The connecting rod is composed of three parts. The part connected to the piston pin is called the small end of connecting rod; another part connected to crankshaft is called the big end, and the middle part connecting small and big end is connecting rod body. The small end of the connecting rod is mostly a thin-walled circular structure. In order to reduce the wear between it and the piston pin, a thin-walled bronze bushing is pressed into the small end hole.
The connecting rod body is a long rod that undergoes significant stress during operation. To prevent its bending and deformation, the body must have sufficient stiffness. For this reason, the connecting rod body of automotive engines mostly adopt an I-shaped section, which can minimize mass while maintaining sufficient stiffness and strength. High strength engines use H-shaped section connecting rod.
The function of the connecting rod is to connect the piston and crankshaft, and transmit the force exerted by piston to crankshaft, transforming the reciprocating motion of piston into the rotational motion of crankshaft.
