The rocker arm is an important component in the engine, whose main function is to convert the cam pressure on camshaft into opening and closing actions of valves.
The function of rocker arm can be classified into the following three aspects:
1.Changing the opening and closing angles of valves
The rocker arm converts the rotational motion of cam into up and down swinging motion of rocker arm by contacting cam on the camshaft, thus driving the opening and closing of valve. The different lengths and shapes of the rocker arms can change the opening and closing angles of valves, controlling the timing of valve intake and exhaust, which in turn affects engine performance and fuel economy.
2.Reducing the opening force of valves
The rocker arm can also reduce the opening force of valves through the lever principle. Due to the high pressure of valve spring, if camshaft is used directly to open valves, greater force is required, which will increase friction and wear. But rocker arm converts the force of camshaft into a smaller rocker arm force through lever principle, thus reducing the opening force of valves.
3.Separating the direct contact between camshaft and valves
Direct contact between them can easily lead to wear and heat loss owing to the different materials and hardness of camshaft and valves. As an intermediate component, the rocker arm can separate direct contact between them, reducing wear and heat loss, thereby improving the lifespan and performance of engine.
