The oil cooler is a device that accelerates the heat dissipation of lubricating oil and keeps it at a lower temperature.
On high power and performance reinforced engines, oil cooler must be installed because of the high heat load. It’s arranged in the lubricating oil circuit, and its working principle is the same as that of radiator.
The oil cooler is classified into air-cooled and water-cooled types. The core of an air-cooled oil cooler consists of many cooling pipes and plates for cooling hot oil with headwind while the vehicle is driving. It requires good ventilation around, and it’s rarely used on ordinary cars where it’s difficult to ensure sufficient ventilation space. This type of cooler is mostly used in racing cars because of the high speed and cooling air volume.
The water-cooled oil cooler is placed in the cooling water circuit and uses the temperature of water to control that of lubricating oil. When the engine starts, it absorbs heat from the cooling water to quickly increase the temperature of lubricating oil. When the temperature is high, it’s chilled by cooling water. The water-cooled oil cooler is composed of a casing made of aluminum alloy, a front and rear cover, and a copper core pipe. A heat sink is installed outside the pipe in order to strength cooling. Cooling water flows outside the pipe, while lubricating oil inside, and the two exchange heat.
