The camshaft is a component in a piston engine. Its function is to control the opening and closing actions of the valve. The main body of camshaft is a cylindrical rod with approximately the same length as cylinder bank. There are several cams on top, which are used to drive the valves.
The camshaft is supported in camshaft bearing hole by its journal, so the number of camshaft journals is an important factor affecting the supporting stiffness of it. If the camshaft stiffness is insufficient, it will bend and deform during operation, affecting the timing of the air distribution. The side of the cam is egg-shaped. The purpose of its design is to ensure sufficient air intake and exhaust of the cylinder. There are three types of camshaft positions: bottom mounted, mid mounted, and top mounted.
